My father was the crew chief on a Huey at the end of the Vietnam war. Their insignia had the slogan "Where Eagles Dare" on it. Does anyone remember this Huey group or have info on how I can get info on it? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

On September 1, 1965, a helicopter assault was made at Ky Ha, Republic of South Vietnam from the USS Princeton. Ky Ha would be the first home of MAG-36, which was comprised of UH-34 and UH-1E helicopters. The UH-1E squadron was VMO-6, home to be of the only Marine Corps Pilot, LtCol Stephen Wesley Pless, which earned the Medal of Honor in 1967.

I was with VMO-6 from 1965 to 1966.

Throughout the years since Vietnam, I have not come into many contacts with other Marines from my squadron. When I have, they have been silent for the most part. There is a reason, of course, and I can only surmise the worse. Willing, however, to communicate with anyone from VMO-6.

Janice Pontillas,

In your message you stated you interviewed your father. May I ask you, who was your father?

I worked with a Captain Robert G. Pontillas after we got back from Vietnam. I returned from Vietnam in September 1966, and returned to the 3d Marine Division in 1971 on Okinawa. The 3d Marine Division was the Reserve Division for Vietnam. Okinawa was just a hop, skip, and a jump from Vietnam.

I served with Captain Pontillas in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania at the 4th Marine Corps District in the Reserve Branch, and both of us started having symptoms relating to Agent Orange.

Bad health issues still plague many Vietnam Veterans today, and of course the Veterans Administration does some very good lip service, but do not treat appropriately all the veterans of that confounded war in ways that they should. Words are one thing, actions are another. Their lack of actions for all Vietnam Veterans tells the complete story.

Please get back to me regarding Captain Robert G. Pontillas, of California, if he is, or is not related to you.

Thank you,

Sgt Raymond L. Britt, USMC

This is an "outstanding" organization. I served with the 1st Cav Div (Airmobile) Feb 67 - Feb 68 and returned to Vietnam with Vets with a Mission in Sept - Oct 2007 (40 yrs later). It was simply amazing to see what had become of the former Republic of South Vietnam. The 1st thing that struck me is there is absolutely no evidence a 10 year war was waged in the country by American and Vietnamese forces! The second thing is how openly friendly and respectful the Vietnamese are to Americans, especially former military that fought there.

I strongly encourage any former military personnel, that are curious and / or interested, to consider a re-visit to the former Republic of South Vietnam with Vets with a Missiion. Since they are a 501 c3 and its a humanitarian mission, all incurred and related expenses are treated by the IRS as a Federal "tax right off."

Although I never found complete closure with my visit, I was able to reach a point within my mind whereby I realized that we had set in motion, factors that brought capitalism and a degree of democracy to Vietnam for the lives we lost there. I also know within my heart of hearts that the politicians of the time, not us that fought there, lost the Vietnam War!!!!!!!!!!!
