My poppa's a Marine. He served with the 1/5 in Vietnam from 1967-1969. His name is Roy Dean Newman. The operations I know he was involved in:
Operation Allan Brook
Mameluke Thrust I and II
Tet
Liberty Bridge~he blew up an underground hospital one visit to Liberty Bridge
Troy Bridge
Beach Long Co
I know that he operated from the DMZ (and North) to Sout of Da Nang. I know he was an F.O., a Rough Rider, Ammo Tech, Sniper.
I am hoping to find people that know my poppa. I am writting a book on him. He, like many Marines, do not talk about this time. This book is a tribute to him and his band of brothers. I would like to speak with anyone who was there, could offer insight...and definately if you know my poppa! He would love to hear from you. He left Kansas City on a train bound for the NCRD, him and 60 other boys. They had fun on their train ride. But the yellow footprints changed that.
I remember one nickname and that is 6 toes Perez from Miami Florida. Also there is a Helo pilot I would like to find out about, he would come into a Hot Zone playing "Sky Pilot" by Eric Burrden and the Animals. Also my poppa had a best friend the name I know is Ot. Ot died in my poppas arms due to a fresh from the states Sgt. who had them walk in an open rice patty. I would love to talk to anyone who knew my poppa then, and reintroduce you.
Sincerely
Deana Newman
A Very Proud Daughter of a Marine!

I'm looking for members of the 57th Transportation Battalion Hq & Hq company that served in Chu Lai from 6/5/1969 to 6/5/1970 or any member of the other companies assigned to the 57th at that time. I'm in a battle with the VA concerning my claim for PTSD. I have to prove that the stressor happened. I was in the EM club one night probably within the first few months of my tour, there were probably 20 to 25 GIs there and the was a loud explosion just outside of the club. We all took off for the bunkers and just a few yards out the door I almost tripped over the torso of a soldier that had blown himself to bits. Arms, legs, & head all blown away. The rumor was that this soldier planned to throw explosive devices into the club but he was wasted on BTs and blew himself up. If anyone out there remembers anything about this event, please contact me. Thanks!!!

Drafted Dec. 13th 1965 Basic Training At Fort Bliss, El Paso, TX. AIT Medical Training At Fort Sam Houston, San Antonio, TX. My Orders To Vietnam Were Deferred Until After My First Son Was Born And My 30 Day Leave Which Was About The End Of September 1966. Durning My Deferment I Ran And Setup Movies For Medical Training Classes At Fort Sam Houston. I Arrived In Vietnam About The End Of September And Was Assigned To The A Company 1st Of The 16th 1st Division Base Camped At Lai Khe. In One Of Those Old Beautiful French Rubber Plantations. My Brother Went Over At About The Same Time With His Seebee Unit And Was Station Somewhere Around Danang Air Base. I Was Made Aware I Don't Remember How Or When, But I Was Told That Two Brothers Didn't Have To Serve In Country At The Same Time. Sometime Around June 1967 I Put In For A Transfer To Hawaii. I Figured I Had A Son, My Brother Didn't, I Was In A Combat Unit, My Brother Wasn't So I Felt Confident He Would Make It Back Without Being Harmed. The Time I Was There We Didn't See A Lot Of Action. Oh There Were A Few Times When There Were VC Rounds Poping over Our Heads And I Had To Bandage Up Some Of Our Guys And Send Them Home. The Hardest One To Take Was When We Were Out On A Road Clearing At Night And One Of Our Tanks Was Traveling Up And Down The Road And The Driver Forgot To Put The Turret On Travel Lock Position Letting The Gun Swing Around And Knocking Out The Driver Causing The Tank To Go Out Of control. The Tank Came Down The Road And Ran Over Our Machine Gunner. Right A Cross His Back And There Was Stopped By A Very Large Tree Stump Right On Top Of Him. We Didn't Want To Drive The Tank Back Off Of Him So We Decided To Dig Him Out Insted. By The Time We Got Him Out There Was No Life Left. Been A Medic It Still Hurts That We Couldn't Save SP-4 Burris. But Any Way I Finally Got To Hawaii Where I Was Stationed At Schofield Barracks. From June 1967 Until November1967 I Was Asigned To Help Train Medics In The 4th Infantry Which Was Getting Ready To Ship Out To Vietnam. In October I Got A Telegram From My Father That My Brother Had Died. His Plane That Was Bring Him Home Crashed After Take Off From Danang Air Base. Some How There Was A Foul Up In His Orders To Come Home. He Was Supposed To Come Home With His Unit But Because Of Foul Up He Was Forced To Stay Another Week And Correct The Problem. One Of His Friends Stayed With Him So They Could Come Back Together. I Should Have Stayed And Sent Him Home First..... It Never Goes Away

There are alot of books written about the Vietnam War, but the book "The Twins Platoon" is one that can be read by anyone, you don't need a military background to understand it. The Twins Platoon is a true, personal story about a group of "boys" who were sworn into the Marine Corp. during a Minnesota Twins baseball game on June 28, 1967, then shipped off to book camp. Before the end of the year most of them were in Vietnam. This is one of the best "History" books for anyone who wants to know what the Vietnam war was like directly from the soldiers. You will feel like you are standing in their boots
