AN-KHE - MORTAR ATTACH ON MAIN BASE AN KHE VIET NAM CO C 228TH ASH BN. FEB 1966 -- Willie Davenport (trying to find my peice of mind), I'm trying to find a GI that was at An-khe between Feb 66 - June 66. I was a door gunner with Co.C 228th 1st Air Cav. I was in Sagion for 8 months, got busted for running over a civilian by a 2nd lt. Put in a 1049 for the 1st Air Cav and was assigned to Co. C 228th assult help. Bn. My mos was 760yz (supply spec]., The 228th put me on a Chinook Helicopter as a door gunner, I didn't even know how to load the M-60. The "only" mission I remember was going out to pick up men from the 2nd. of the 7th. I was about to open fire while we were about 500 ft. All I saw was a bunch of men running around on the ground, no one told me what we were doing when we left the main base. A crew chief dropped a ladder down the center of the chopper, exactly the same time I was about to open up with the M-60. I remember the men climbing up and sitting against the side of the chopper, the expression on there faces I will "NEVER" forget. For some reason I was taken off the chopper as a door gunner & assigned to a Captain as a radio operator & jeep driver. My call sign was Alpa Alpa Charlie 2 indian. There was about 14 of us I think. I remember someone struck a land mine and we were told to hold our positions & not move. I flipped out for some reason. The next thing I remember was a Lt. Colonel leaning over me asking me what was my problem. The next thing I remember was being at Tun-So-Nute air base in Sagion with about 3,000 other GI's waiting for my name to be called out to board a plane to come home. My life has not been the same since that officer asked me what was my problem. I was in the Army 3 yrs. and can remember only four names, all from Sagion. I'm trying to find someone that might remember a "fool" that came to the 228th by way of a 1049 [request for transfer] from Sagion. I'm divorced, live alone, don't have hardly any communications with my 3 kids or grandsons. It's real bad. If someone out there could help me it would make all the difference in the world in the way I live the rest of my life. I do remember my very first night I arrived at An-Khe. We had a mortar attack. It only lasted a few minutes. I remember grabbing my M-16 & running to my bunkard naked and scared beyond belief. The old timers were on top of the bunkerd "drunk" rasing hell like there wasn't nothing going on. I was green, the VC were trying to take out some of our choppers. This happened Feb 1966. If anyone can remember this attack at An-Khe or anything that happened with Co. C 228th asshault helt. Bn. between Feb 1966 -June 1966, please e-mail me at zr6@earthlink.net. It would mean everything to me to know what happened my last four months in Nam. Your brother WILLIE DAVENPORT.

i served with 1/28 inf. charlie co. big red one in vietnam. we lost a lot of good grunts , especially in the tet offensive. in dec. 1967 we were at bu dop reinforcing a special forces camp. it was hell! while out on a patrol one day a very good friend and i were sent out to recon the area. we came upon a vc outpost with 2 vc taking a nap. we took them out. my friend grapped an a - k 47 rifle and we haull ass out of there. by than the other vcs became aware and started firing toward us. we joint the rest of the company and pulled back to the perimeter. we were not awarded in medals for our action. in another patrol combat photographer horst faas was wounded. i was not too far behind him in line. my friend got killed in the first day of the tet offensive with only days left in country. he was the best a hardcore grunt with a lot of notches in his belt. his name was charles permaloff. if anybody is out there please make contact. i have some pictures and some newspaper clips of the unit in action.

I was a radio operator with H&S 26th Marines on Hill 55 '66-'67. I hate to say it, but I have no memories of peoples names there, but I wanted to say thank you to those that brought me home. I lost many friends in that war. We never fought for political reasons, we fought for each other so that they could come home too

My father, James Rebant Jr., was in the Marine Corp from 1966-1967 and was stationed in Chu Lai (Mag 12?). He recently passed away and I am looking for ANY information from those who served with him. He was a combat engineer and worked with the water supply at the base...if this information helps. I'm looking for any stories (good or bad) that you could share with me. He spoke very little of Vietnam and now, due to his passing, I am relying on others for info. Thank you in advance.
